Phnom Penh • Open 24 hours
emart24 is a Korean convenience store, and the Penghouth branch is the one I actually live at. Hot street food, a wall of ramyun, Korean skincare, cold drinks — and a $3 bowl of rose tteokbokki I order four times a week.
I have been to a lot of convenience stores. This is the only one I would call a favourite place instead of just a shop.
They serve two kinds — original and rose. I always take rose. It is creamy and sweet first, then a small kick of spice at the end, plus one more flavour I still cannot put a name to. Big size is about $3, small is about $1.50, and it comes with a soft-boiled egg and fish cake on top. Right now I am eating it four days a week, which tells you everything.
Almost everything on the shelf starts around $0.50. Fish Cake from the hot broth tray are under a dollar, the DIY ramyun wall lets you build a bowl for pocket change, and the Korean cosmetics cost less than the beauty shops. I have tried a lot of the menu and I have never felt overcharged.
I mostly go in the evening, sometimes very late at night, and it never feels like a store waiting to close. The lights are on, the staff are friendly every single time, and there is always a mix of people inside — students, people finishing work, foreigners. Nobody is rushing you.
